Beach Walking Track

The beach walking track is 900 metres or around 15 minutes walk from the park camping area. There is a large sand dune to traverse on the way so the track is unsuitable for wheel chair access and push bikes. This walking track goes through the Richmond River Nature Reserve to South Ballina Beach. The track begins opposite the pool and just follow the signs to the water.

South Ballina Beach Vehicle Access

No permits are required to drive on South Ballina Beach. Upon driving onto the beach from the South Ballina access point, do not drive north toward the rock wall as fines apply, do not drive into the sand dunes as fines apply. The sand dunes are breeding habitat for the Pied Oyster Catcher which is an endangered shore bird species at it's most prolific on South Ballina Beach. 17km's down the beach there is a rock formation known locally as the Coffee Rocks. These rocks can only be traversed on low tide and small swell conditions. Once on the southern side of the Coffee Rocks, keep in mind that as the tide comes back in you will not be able to get back up to the northern end of the beach. 13km's further south is the Air Force Beach entry/exit point at Evans Head where you can drive back up through Bunjalong National Park to the sugar town of Broadwater. From Broadwater it is only 6km's on the Pacific Highway to the Wardell Bridge. Just take the right turn just before the bridge at the sign South Ballina and the road is called River Drive. 15km's along River Drive you will find South Ballina Beach Road with the park located 3km's up on the right with a phone box out the front.

Important Notice:

The local Police are now regularly enforcing no dogs on South Ballina Beach. They are riding off road motorcycles with blue and white chequered side decals and are fining people with dogs $400 per dog. The gazetted off leash dog area is 5km's down South Ballina Beach at Patches Beach extending 500 metres either side of the Patches Beach Exit. Even people found with dogs in their vehicles outside of this area are being fined. There is also a speed limit on South Ballina Beach of 30kmh and when within 50 metres of a pedestrian or shore bird the limit reduces to 15kmh. Police have been witnessed on the beach parked behind fishermen's vehicles using radar guns over holiday periods and when people fail to slow to 15kmh fine them for speeding and do breath test, seat belts, vehicle defect inspections etc. A good indicator is the Police set up a booze bus on the beach access track on Easter Sunday this year and as one officer commented quote: "on a normal shift each unit only gets 2 or 3 tickets, here we hit pay dirt we got hundreds so we will be back".
